General Rules
1.To be eligible in this event, the exhibitor must be no more than one (1) year out of high school or have completed the GED (not to exceed the age of 19) day of the show. Eligible exhibitors must also be residents of Alabama.
2. Pens will not be provided, but ties down are available.
3. Any breed or crossbreed wether or doe may be shown. Does must be shown as either a market meat or a breeding doe. Does cannot be shown as both market meat and breeding.
4. All goats must be dehorned or have horns tipped.
5. Animals are to be shown in their natural conformation. Any surgical procedure, injection or application, of any substance that could affect the animal’s performance or alter the natural contour, conformation, or appearance, is prohibited.
6. Any animals showing signs of contagious diseases will be excused from participation.
7. No inhumane treatment of animals will be allowed (i.e. slapping, kneeing, etc.).
8. There will be no single entry classes. Single entries will be combined with either the class above or below. Decision of placement will be that of the show superintendent.
9. Handicapped exhibitors may receive assistance in the show ring by an appropriate volunteer.
10. All animals will be exhibited at the owner’s risk.
11. Goats that are unruly and not under the control of the exhibitor or are a disruption to the show, the judge, other exhibitors, and/or animals will be excused from the show ring.
12. All goats are to be free of visible signs of contagious and/or infectious diseases.
13. All entries, to be eligible to show, must list the USDA Premise ID number on the entry form. Free downloadable forms are available at http://agi/alabama.gov/premise-id
14. Any questions or conflicts that arise will be taken before the show superintendent. All decisions by the show superintendent and the sheep and goat committee are FINAL.
15. Any individual that becomes belligerent toward a show official or another participant shall be asked to leave the premises. Unsportsmanlike conduct will NOT be tolerated.
Showmanship and Costume
1. Showmanship classes will be divided as follows: 0-4, 5-6-7, 8-9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15 and up.
2. Costume classes will be divided into 0-6 and 7-12 and 13 up
3. Goats shown in either showmanship or costume must be eligible to show in either a market meat or a breeding doe class.
Youth Market Meat Goats
1. All entries must be tagged for easy identification of the animal.
2. Minimum weight is 35 pounds.
3. Exhibitors are limited to 4 entries.
4. An exhibitor must show their own animal in each class entered unless that exhibitor has more than one animal in a class. Any exhibitor with more than one entry in a class may have another registered youth help them.
5. Entries will be weighed by show officials and then divided into 5 weight classes as equal in number as possible. (Number of classes may vary depending on the number of entries and the show officials’ discretion.)
6. All goats must be carrying all milk teeth at time of weigh-in. Goats showing either or both of the first pair of permanent incisors will not be eligible to show.
7. Wethers with any testicular tissue will not be allowed to show.
Breeding Goat Rules
1. All percentage and full blood does must have legible tattoos that match the registration papers.
2. An exhibitor may have no more than two entries in a class.
3. Birth dates, as listed on the registration certificate, will be used to determine the class divisions. Show date will be the base date for computing ages for classes.
4. In accordance with USDA guidelines: All commercial does must have “USDA Approved Scrapie Eradication Ear tags.” It is recommended that all meat goats exhibited, be enrolled in the Scrapie Flock Certification Program. Contact State Veterinarian’s office or Dr. Cindy Brasfield at 334-657-5549 for Scrapie Program ear tags and related information.
5. Commercial does must be checked by a show official for signs of tattoos. A Commercial Doe is one not registered with any breed registry. A commercial doe carrying any sign of a tattoo will not be permitted to show.
6. Does over two years of age must show evidence of pregnancy or evidence of prior kidding. However, does still showing signs of just prior kidding (i.e. visible discharge) will not be allowed to show.
7. Goats must be registered to the exhibitor. Transfer of ownership within 60 days prior to the show will not be accepted. Original registration certificate is required on all animals. A stamped faxed copy will NOT be accepted. All original registration papers will be checked by show personnel for verification of ownership and must be properly registered with the appropriate breed association.
8. Exhibitors are limited to 6 breeding doe entries.
9. This show is an Alabama Born and Bred Show, all breeding does shown must follow this format.
